Aplix Corporation Expands to Support Unique Needs of US-based Manufacturers and Customers

San Francisco, Calif - March 25, 2002 -

Global leader in Java technology solutions for embedded consumer products sharpens US focus

Aplix Corporation, a leading developer of Java-based software, announced today at the JavaOne conference that it has expanded its presence and focus in the United States (US). With more than five million mobile phone units using Aplix software shipped to date, Aplix has achieved success as the Java platform of choice for the majority of Java-enabled mobile phones in Japan. Recognizing the unique requirements for market share growth in mobile handsets and Java adoption in the US, Aplix has re-established a focus and commitment to this market by expanding the company's San Francisco facility to provide domestic support for customers manufacturing in the US.

The San Francisco base of operations will be referred to as Aplix Corporation of America and will be headed by Michael Leone, Chief Technology Officer. Mr. Leone has spent the last eight years working in the Java and enterprise markets where he helped to bring successful solutions to market. Most recently, Leone was the director of sales engineering of data management and synchronization company PointBase, where he was responsible for leading a team supporting pre-sales, business development and alliances technical support. In his new role at Aplix, he will lead the effort to create a research and development arm of the company and also establish a technical foundation for strategic alliances with US-based companies.

"Our goal is to build on the momentum we have created in Japan and Europe," said Leone. "To do this, we must form much stronger alliances with US companies in the Java ecosystem. We intend to show that we not only have a great Java platform, we also have engineers who have been focusing on embedded Java for more than six years; we have the experience and expertise and are ready to help US customers make the move to Java and realize the value of Java-based offerings."

The US-based research and development team of senior engineers will not only deploy existing JBlend™ implementations, Aplix's unique Java platform, but will also act as a think tank for the development of new solutions for US businesses that are focused on Java and enterprise mobility. Leone continued, "The Japanese market has been much more consumer focused when it comes to wireless applications than either Europe or the United States. In the US, there is a significant trend towards wireless business applications and Aplix will be working very hard to meet the needs of these enterprise customers."

Honoring their commitment to the US market, Aplix will be participating as a Gold Sponsor of Sun's JavaOne Conference (booth 214). Aplix will demonstrate a wide range of JBlend™ platform deployments including the first Java-based consumer electronics product, the Sony DCM-M1 DiscCam, 2.5G handsets which are currently driving the Japanese mobile market, and JBlend™ deployments and partnerships that represent the future of Java technology. In recognition of JBlend™'s contribution to the Java Community, Sun Microsystems will feature the newest JBlend™ platform-based mobile phone on the market (J-SH51 by Sharp J-PHONE) at the Consumer and Embedded Device Showcase in the JavaOne Pavilion.
