Aplix Corporation's JBlend™ to support T-Engine, the new TRON standard!

TOKYO - December 12, 2001 -

An Ultra- miniature CPU board will run Java applets in cell phones

Aplix Corporation (head office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; (President Keisuke Hayashi) announces that its JBlend™ embedded Java™ solution, already widely adopted as an industry standard platform for cellular phones and other mobile information devices, will support T-Engine, the next-generation standard development environment of the TRON Project in the second quarter of 2002.

T-Engine implementing the JBlend™ platform is on display at TRONSHOW 2002, the 18th TRON Project Symposium, held from December 13 to 15 at Laforet Museum in Roppongi.

T-Engine is a new open hardware platform encompassing standards for both software and hardware. As a foundation for porting middleware, it promises to revolutionize system development by deploying a CPU board small enough to be embedded right in the final product.

The use of this board in combination with JBlend™, as an environment for developing embedded system applications and user interfaces using a low-cost PC-based Java development environment, will eliminate the need for expensive development systems and hardware prototypes; thus, transforming the basic architecture of embedded system development. Details of T-Engine and of the TRON Project can be found at http://www.tron.org/.

With JBlend™ already well established as an embedded Java solution in popular cell phones, Java applications for cell phones will be able to run on T-Engine as well, without modification. The bringing together of JBlend™ supporting T-Engine has clear advantages for anyone developing next-generation information devices, especially when it comes to creating innovative user interfaces with interactive features.

JBlend™ offers the Java advantages for outfitting embedded systems with a sophisticated GUI and networking functionality. Additionally, the software resources and development know-how incorporated in the wealth of Java applications available for cell phones can be carried over to products in other categories such as home appliances, with JBlend™ making possible seamless linking among T-Engine, cell phones, other information devices and home electronics products.

  • Background on T-Engine

The T-Engine project is the brainchild of TRON Project leader Ken Sakamura (University of Tokyo), who proposed it as a standard development environment for real-time systems and as the building blocks for ubiquitous computer environments. The T-Engine hardware is a palm-sized CPU board for standard use in developing next-generation embedded systems. At its heart is T-Kernel, the successor to the ITRON-specification OS. It is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2002.

Aplix has been participating in the TRON Project and as a provider of Java solutions for embedded system use, has been part of the T-Engine project from its inception. With the implementation of T-Engine as a Java execution environment as a standard platform for cell phones, information terminals and next-generation information appliances, Aplix aims to make available a development environment that will give further impetus to a wider acceptance of mobile information devices.
