Aplix Corporation Teams Up with PointBase, Inc.

Combination of JBlendT with the PointBase Embedded Database will Create Trend-Setting New Potential in Next-Generation Consumer Electronics
Aplix Corporation (head office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Ryu Koriyama) is pleased to announce a cooperative agreement with PointBase, Inc. in the U.S. The two firms have decided to combine the strengths of JBlendT, Aplix Corporation's JTRON-specification real-time OS, and the PointBase database, to bring powerful new functionality to consumer electronics products and cellular phones.
PointBase is a database certified as 100% Pure Java, designed for mobile client applications, Web devices and the like.
By enabling a DBMS to be built readily in embedded systems, PointBase lets developers incorporate intelligent functions with ease in their consumer products. For example, a search function can be added to a digital TV or digital video deck. Different cell phones can share their address data across platforms. And the potential for next-generation home networks, in which various devices collaborate with each other, is enormous.
Aplix Corporation, at the development frontier of Java embedded systems, is ready to provide solid support and a versatile development environment.
- About PointBase
PointBase is a database designed specifically for Java applications. It has been certified as 100% Pure Java by Sun Microsystems and by IBM.
Taking full advantage of Java as a platform-independent technology while also saving memory, the modular design of this database allows application systems to be configured by loading only the functions actually used, for highly efficient use of memory, processor and network resources.
With the Universal Synchronization (UniSync) option in place, data can be synchronized between PointBase systems located anywhere on the network. The synchronization function integrates seamlessly into existing Java applications. Individual users at various points on the network have access to a main data warehouse. This functionality is useful in customer services, field operations, and SCM (Supply Chain Management) applications. Updates by individual users are reflected in the main data, giving all users access to the latest information at all times on the main server.

- Overview of JBlendT
JBlendT is Java technology for embedded systems. While retaining the advantages of existing software resources, it combines the strengths of real-time OS tasks, with their network support and scalability, and Java optimized for embedded use.
JBlendT was originally developed by merging Sun Microsystems' Java platform with an ITRON-specification embedded OS. Taking advantage of the outstanding real-time performance of the ITRON architecture, the result was a real-time operating system (RTOS) equipped with a user-friendly GUI environment. This winning combination has enabled developers to create new products for the market in much less time than before, greatly reducing the development effort required. JBlendT versions supporting many other RTOS architectures besides ITRON are being readied, in order to provide a broader range of embedded Java solutions.
JBlendT has already won adoption in popular consumer products. For example, Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. has chosen JBlendT for their Digital Image Album, a device for storing and viewing digital still images. J Blend has been adopted in Sony's Mini Disc camcorder, the MD DISCAM. And it will be used in the next-generation J-Phone brand of cellular phones. These and many more adoptions, including joint development projects with major manufacturers that have yet to be announced, are making JBlendT an industry standard for Java implementations in next-generation digital consumer products.
